My main objection to this idol is that it has a human face. The trunk is the only part of the face that bears a resemblance to an elephant head. The cheeks are like human cheeks, and so is the forehead. Therefore, for me, the idol is not authentic. This issue may not matter so much to some buyers—but there are other problems with the idol as well, which they need to be aware of.
One of these is that this idol of Lord Ganesha has a trunk that is right-leaning. It does say so in the BudhShiv website, and can be seen also in the picture of it there—but the customer should be aware of what it implies. When the trunk is right-leaning (DAKSHINABHIMUKHI), it is believed that the idol demands to be cared for with the elaborate rituals practiced in temples, which is a difficult and impractical thing for the common householder to do. Idols with a left-leaning trunk (VAMAMUKHI), on the other hand, are thought not have this stricture and so are suited for the common householder. We can reasonably assume that it is the common householder who is buying online here, and not temple priests. Why then should the customer be presented with an idol for sale which has a right-leaning trunk? He should be informed upfront of the implication of the right-leaning trunk by the seller. Otherwise, he may regret his purchase.
It may be noted here that while the distinction between the left-leaning and right-leaning trunk may be important to some, it does not find support in scriptural sources; it is based entirely on the traditions espoused by temple priests and the expertise of Vastu practitioners. It is noteworthy also, in this context, that the idol is hollow—and priests and Vastu experts may take exception to its hollowness as well. Having said as much, in my view, the real question is whether the idol resonates with the buyer, which should be the overarching consideration. That is only my view, however; it is for the buyer to decide what suits him best. To empower him or her to do so, he or she should be given full information upfront.
Consider the idol’s plus points. It is shown sitting on a lotus, which represents spiritual unfoldment. This symbolism adds to its charm. It also has an axe in one of its hands, which is not shown in some idols of the Lord. The axe symbolises the power to cut away the ego, material attachments, and negativity. It was given to the elephant-headed god by his father, Lord Shiva, and represents divine authority and protection. This aspect is much more impressive in the website picture, where the axe looks quite sturdy. In the 3 inch idol, which I purchased, the axe is quite thin and flimsy. It is not impressive.
We see further that in the website picture, the idol is copper coloured, while the actual idol is in gold. Copper colour looks much better. Another striking feature of the idol is its eyes, which are well etched and realistic in the website picture. That is not always the case with brass idols. This is a plus point. However, looking at the actual idol, you have to peer at it closely to see the eyes. It is only in the website picture, which is blown up to many times the size of the idol, that the eyes can be clearly seen. Another point to note is that the trunk of the idol seems to be too thin. It almost looks worm-like, which is not commensurate with the dignity of Lord Ganesha. This to me is a big flaw. The trunk doesn’t look like that at all in the picture. The picture is quite big, magnified many times, and so the trunk also looks big.
Online buyers are disadvantaged in that they are not able to see finer points such as these.
In sum, those thinking of online-buying of this idol need to be aware of the details mentioned above in order to make an informed choice. The website picture alone is misleading. If I had seen this idol in the BudhShiv shop, I wouldn’t have spent Rs. 1,482 on it, which is a lot of money for a middle-class customer like me. Consequently, I requested BudhShiv to take the idol back, listing all the reasons I have cited, and they were kind enough to oblige, but only as a special case.
In my view, buyers need to weigh in all the relevant facts listed in this review so as to arrive at a reasoned decision for themselves. For those who wish to purchase from this seller, I feel the best option would be to visit the premises rather than order online. If the buyer is not resident in Delhi or the store is not easily accessible to him or her, I would recommend online-buying from another seller who accepts returns and gives refunds as a matter of course. There are many of these in the market.
